News from Rod Barbee Photography
April 2018

Greetings,

Spring! Bailey and I saw our first snake of the year about a week ago. She didn't seem to care about it; maybe the snake didn't smell "interesting" yet.

Well, workshop season is upon us and I've got a few things I want to play with this year. One thing I want to try with my groups is more long exposure photography, especially on the Olympic coast and with moving clouds and wind-blown wheat in the Palouse. I also want to do some more experimenting with intentional blurring, like the image below from Steptoe Butte in the Palouse.

To that end, I've added a 10-stop neutral density filter to my existing 6-stop filter.
I also have a variable ND filter, but I've been finding it easier to work with the fixed ND filters. If you're coming to one of my workshops and want to give long exposures a try, feel free to borrow my filters.

Another technique I want to explore with my workshop groups is extending depth of field by making multiple shots and blending them in Photoshop or one of the available stacking programs. I've had some success with these kinds of shots in the past. I've written about it here and here.

3 spaces left in Palouse – hotel deadline looms

I still have three spaces available in my Palouse workshop next June. But there’s a hotel reservation deadline coming up soon. On April 19 the remaining rooms in the block will be released. And since available rooms in June are a rare thing, they will go fast. So if you sign up after April 19th I can’t guarantee that there will be a room available.
If you’re even just thinking about this trip, let me know soon. Real soon.
Visit my Palouse Workshop page for more details.

Iceland in the autumn

Four great reasons to visit Iceland in the autumn:
1) It’s less crowded. The summer tourism season is over.
2) Fall color. Who doesn’t love fall color.
3) Auroras. The nights are getting long and aurora viewing can be spectacular.
4) It’s Iceland.

For this trip I’m teaming with a tour company in Iceland that comes highly recommended by colleagues I respect.
They know the moods, weather, and light of Iceland and will get us to the right place at the right time. And I’ll be there to help you capture it all. From beach ice in the foregrounds to auroras twisting in the sky.
There are only five spaces left on this tour of one of the most spectacular and photogenic places on the planet. But be careful, you might just fall in love with Iceland.

This tour is September 26 to October 5. Check out the details and itinerary on my Iceland Tour page.

Back to Basics

For those who are new to photography or need a little refresher on the basics, I have a series of lessons I wrote a few years ago on the basics of exposure and metering. In it I talk about shutter, aperture, ISO, meters, tonalities, and more. I still think it's one of the best things I've ever put together. Hope that doesn't hype it too much or set you up for a crushing letdown.
Check it out.

Sitka!

I’ve heard from David Middleton that there is still plenty of space left in the Sitka workshop this August, but that it is starting to get more interest.

Sitka is a smorgasbord for an outdoor photographer, especially if you like marine mammals (Humpback whales, sea lions, seals, otters), birds (sea birds and birds of prey), streams (with salmon!), harbors, and rain forests. Plus the sunsets can be spectacular.

And Sitka is a delightful little town in which to wander about and take pictures. Seriously, you may not want to leave.
Find out more on the Sitka page of my workshops site.

Rainier

I'm gauging interest in a Mt. Rainier National Park tour/workshop for sometime this August. Likely surrounding the first weekend or third weekend. I'd just like to see if there was any interest before I look into finding lodging and applying for the permit.

So if you might be interested, let me know!

Patagonia!

My Patagonia tour is still about a year away, but I just wanted to tease you a bit with this awesome picture from my friend Dick Badger.
You should consider joining us in April 2019 for autumn in Patagonia. It will be spectacular.
Take a look at what's in store on my Patagonia page.

Big Lightroom Update

And finally, Lightroom got a big update today, I just heard about it myself. But it looks to be pretty significant. Find out more by visiting Victoria Bampton's blog.

And if you haven't purchased it yet, her Lightroom Missing FAQ book is indispensable.
