News from Rod Barbee Photography
March 2018

Greetings,

I'm a little early this time! I wanted to get the news out about the Sitka workshop as soon as I could.
I've also got news about other workshops and, you may be utterly surprised to read, news about our latest home project. All in all....just par for the course...

Just added – Sitka in August

For the past three years I’ve been joining David Middleton and Brenda Berry in Sitka for a fun and very productive workshop (Sitka has it all!)
And I’ll be helping out again this year, provided enough people sign up (hint, hint).
In the past we’ve run this as a Crossroads workshop, where we venture out and get pictures that are needed by the non-profit organizations we’ve teamed with. Then spend a ton of time in the classroom discussing stuff and looking at pictures. It's a great learning experience for those wanting to put their photography to greater use.

But this year’s trip is a regular nature/outdoor photography workshop where we’ll be spending more time photographing nature (streams, forests, salmon, seashores, whales, sunsets, otters, whales, sea birds, birds of prey, seals, whales. Did I mention whales?) and less time in the classroom than during a Crossroads workshop.
Make no mistake, you'll still be subjected to Mr. Middleton's stories, grumblings, and critiques.

Then add the harbors, downtown Sitka with its historic church and other buildings, the Alaska Raptor Center, harbor Mountain, and Totem Park. Like I said, Sitka has it all.

We hike old growth, wander harbors, and venture out onto the sound with the always entertaining Captain Paul of Gallant Adventures, arguably the best wildlife tour guide in Sitka. We'll see and photograph whales, otters, seals, sea birds, fishing boats, and more. You’ll love Paul.
This workshop is through Santa Fe Workshops. There's a little more info on my Sitka page and that has a link to the full scoop at Santa Fe Workshops.

One space left in Olympic

There is still one space remaining in my May 19-23 Olympic National Park workshop.
Lush rain forests, moss covered rocks in streams, waterfalls, the coast....And we may even see an elk or two.
Click on over to my Olympic page for more details. Since there is just the one spot left, shoot me an email to confirm availability before sending money.

Waterfalls!

And there's still space in my Silver Falls State Park waterfalls workshop, April 26-29, based in Salem, OR.

Silver Falls is a great place for seeing several waterfalls in a relatively small area. All of the falls are easy to get to with just a little hiking. And the hiking isn't long or difficult, though you will be going downhill and then back uphill for most of the falls.

Since the tragic fire in the Columbia River Gorge last year, Silver Falls has become the best place I know of to photograph a concentration of waterfalls with easy access.

Why not join us!

Zion in the fall

Next October 31 - Nov. 4, Don Mammoser and I have a Zion National Park workshop planned. And you know what, it will be the perfect getaway to avoid all those phone calls you're going to get leading up to the elections.
Now doesn't photographing Zion and hanging out with me and Don sound a whole lot better? Think of it as therapeutic. I know I will.
We'll photograph the fall color and towering cliffs alongside the Virgin River, dramatic sunrises lighting up the Tower of the Virgins, the sandstone swirls and colorful box elders on the higher east side of the park. And, if we get a clear morning, we'll likely make the trek over to Bryce Canyon for a sunrise with the hoodoos!
So think about it: election stress or autumn in Zion. This isn't a difficult choice.

Take a gander at my Zion page for more details.

It has begun

Long time readers will recall that a little over a year ago I moved into the office-studio we had built on our property. That was actually step one of a master plan.

Step two was to repair all the little holes in the walls of my old office and paint in preparation for turning this room into a guest bedroom.

Step three was to clear out our old guest bedroom.

And now we come to step four. Removing the walls of the old guest bedroom in order to expand our kitchen/dining area. Step four has been accomplished, mostly. Enough for us to visualize where things will go.

We are now living in the perpetual remodel zone.

And the next steps have also been set in motion: acquiring a contractor (the same guy who built my awesome office), consulting with an interior designer, looking at appliances, and cabinets, and reassuring Bailey that it won’t be that noisy, really.
I don’t yet know how much there will be for me to do, though Tracy has mentioned tiling back-splashes and has been sending me ideas of things she’s positive I’ll be able to build. And if it means me getting new tools, I’m all for giving it a try.
