News from Rod Barbee Photography
February 2018

Greetings,

Well, after a few weeks of winter, the grass is beginning to grow again. Seriously, I need to mow the lawn (if we get a dry day) and it's only February!
It's been an extra wet winter, but fortunately without any major windstorms. Which is nice because every time that happens I spend about four or five hours cleaning up the yard.
But it's all good. I actually like the cloudy rainy days, a true Pacific Northwesterner. If that's a word.

But anyway, spring is coming and that means getting out and photographing new ferns, flowers, and other Springy things. And I've got a couple of workshops that take advantage of all that Springy newness, including Silver Falls State Park this April. Still space available too.

Lightroom Classic CC: The Missing FAQ

It’s here! Victoria Bampton’s updated Lightroom Classic CC: The Missing FAQ.
For years Victoria's Lightroom Missing FAQ books have been my go-to book for answering any Lightroom questions I have (and quite a few questions that others have emailed me – this book makes me look smart!)

This version is updated with all the latest features that Lightroom Classic CC has brought to us, like the awesome new range mask you can apply to the Adjustment Brush and Graduated Filters. I’ve been using the heck out of this feature.
Victoria also explains how features work. For example, those arcane noise reduction sliders, like Luminance Detail and Color Smoothness.
She also has a pretty thorough discussion on using Lightroom on multiple computers, offering multiple options.
And a whole lot more. Seriously, if you have Lightroom this book is a must-have.

Get your copy at Victoria's site.

Warning: Above links are Affiliate links! This means if you buy something, I get a cut. It’s really a win-win. You get a great book and I get a couple bucks. Plus the satisfaction of passing on something I truly think will help you. So that’s more of a win-win-win!

Palouse and Olympic

I’ve still got room in both my Olympic (May 19-23) and Palouse (June 20-24) workshops. And if you want to experience both of these iconic Washington State locations I’m offering a discount of $200 off of each workshop. Hey, that should pay for your hotel stay for at least one of the workshops.
Just email me back and let me know you want to take advantage of this offer and I’ll give you instructions for signing up.
And if you’ve already signed up for one of them and want to sign up for the other, I’ll adjust your invoice to reflect the discount.
Two of my favorite locations in a month’s time. Should be fun!

Ísland (Iceland)

Iceland
There are still five spaces remaining for my autumn Iceland photo tour this Sept. 26 - Oct. 5. We'll be photographing waterfalls, fall color, rugged coastlines, glacial lagoons and more. If the weather and the solar activity cooperates we'll also be photographing auroras.
But I have to warn you, Iceland is addictive. You'll want to go back.
So if you're definitely not into awesome experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime, then you better skip this trip.
I'm really looking forward to this tour. One reason why is because of the tour company I'm teaming up with. They come highly recommended by people in the workshop world that I respect and trust.
For more information and to sign up, visit the Iceland page on my workshops site.

Triple D

Several years ago I ran workshops at the Triple “D” Game Farm in Kalispell, MT. If you’ve not heard of it before, it’s a place that has wildlife models available for the photographic and movie industry. Their animals are beautiful and well cared for. If you’ve ever seen pictures of baby bobcats in calendars or cards, those images were made at a place like Triple “D”. It’s just too difficult and puts too much stress on an animal to even attempt to get such images in the wild.
Triple “D” has been serving the professional photographic and film community for something like 40 years and they know what photographers need.
I’m considering on running one or two workshops there this year and/or next, and am wondering if there’s any interest out there. These workshops are typically 3-4 days and include 8 species with the option to pay for more. All animals are in a natural habitat.
So if you’re interested, shoot me an email and let me know. Would you be interested in baby animals? Winter? Big cats? Wolves?
If there seems to be enough interest I’ll contact Triple “D” and see about setting up some workshops.

Just because

Our dog Bailey has been a significant part of our lives (and this newsletter) since she joined the family back in November of 2005.
She may be 12 years old now, a little whiter around the muzzle, and a little slower, but she's still a puppy and still loves to play and still loves all her friends.

She even has her own blog and Instagram account!
It's a little difficult for her to type and use the iPhone though...

So here are a few pictures from when she was a much younger puppy. In fact these are from her first month with us.
She was so tiny I could pretty much hold her in one hand.

We still enjoy our walkies, even though we don't go as far as we used to and don't do as much cross-county trekking in the woods. But sometimes she'll surprise me with one of her frenzied forest runs.
And she always likes finding something new to smell and hopefully not roll in....
