Greetings,
There are two things that I wasn't expecting: December showing up so quickly and my Seahawks at only 6-5. But I have control over neither so I'll just have to make the best of it.
I've got a lot to get to in this month's newsletter, including an improved office space, a book sale, an indirect close encounter of the feline kind, and a welcome to a new family member. (No, we didn't get another dog, but that's a great idea!)

The winter to-do list report

Remember last month when I bragged about nearly completing an item from my winter to-do list (tossing slides)? An item that's been on that list for, oh, a dozen years?
Well, it gets even better. I've now managed to get the slides down to a number that will fit inside just one drawer! And in the process I also was able to eliminate two 2-drawer filing cabinets. In fact, I can now get all my office documents and slides into one 4-drawer cabinet.
And since I no longer need a 4-foot light table, I took that out of my office too. And a bunch of other stuff as well. This leaves me with some extra room but it also removed a flat working surface.
It was then I came up with the best idea for my office that I've ever had.
What?
Oh...Um...well... Tracy just reminded me that this was her idea and that I pooh-poohed it at first.
I hate it when she's right.
Anyway, the great idea was to get a heavy duty rolling tool cabinet. This cabinet now holds all my matting and framing tools and supplies, my printer ink and paper, spare camera stuff, my projector, my small light table, and more. And it gives me a solid work surface for all sorts of little in-home projects (Not to mention a flat surface to "collect" things).
See, the best idea I've ever had!

Workshops
My 2016 schedule is posted on my Workshops web site. Some trips are already starting to fill. In fact, Zion is nearly half full already.
You know what would be a great Christmas gift to yourself or a loved one? Yep. A photo workshop or tour. Bet you didn't see that coming!
This year, Don Mammoser and I are doing back-to-back Olympic-Oregon Coast workshops. And if you take both, there's a discount! Be sure to check either of those trips out for the details.

Book Sale

Hey, I've also got the second best Christmas present you can give to a loved one or yourself: Oregon Coast Memories and/or 88 Secrets to Wildlife Photography.
I have a limited supply of autographed copies (about 20 or so each) of both of these books that I'm selling at a substantial discount. And no, they're not discounted because they're autographed. Who said that?
Oregon Coast Memories is half-price and the 88 Secrets book is 70% off while my supply lasts.
Order here!

Review of Bob Hitchman's Hoh guide
You all know about Bob Hitchman's Photograph America Newsletter? Well, you should. It's a good sized collection of location reports for all sorts of areas across the country as well as a good (and inexpensive) first step you can take when starting to research a location you want to photograph.
Because I'm always curious about how someone writes up an area I'm familiar with, I bought Bob's new guide to the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park. I've posted a review on my blog.

Cat scratching post
On our walk the other day, Bailey and I discovered what looks an awful lot like a giant cat scratching post. Or I should say a giant cat's scratching post. Or the scratching post of a giant cat.
Bailey tells the story best.
Long time readers might remember the famous cougar incident of 2012. This just serves as a reminder that we are not alone.
(unrelated: I'm really looking forward to the new X-Files mini series!)

For all of you out there that have your own website, it's pretty easy to add some animated holiday decorations to your home page (like swinging colored bells!). For those using The Turning Gate Lightroom plugins to create your websites, I've got a tutorial for you right here. Convenient, right?
And if you have another type of site (static html pages, WordPress, etc), you can do this too. You'll just need to add the html and css code from the TTG tutorial to the right places in your own site. Oh, and make sure your site supports Font Awesome.
Adding Font Awesome is easy. If you're using WordPress and your theme doesn't already support Font Awesome, try the Better Font Awesome plug-in. If you have another type of site, you can grab the needed code to insert in the head tag of your site from the Font Awesome site.

Welcome Lydia Ann Barbee
And last, but certainly not least, I've got a new granddaughter! Lydia arrived November 14th.
I forget how tiny these things are.
