Greetings rod,
Well I hope you all are having a good new year.
Since the last newsletter we've had a couple of nice little wind storms that kept me busy in the yard cleaning up.
Today I'll be staining baseboard so I can finally put the finishing touches on the bathroom remodel.
I've also been busy updating my website, as you'll see below.

New Site Design
As many of you know, my website was made using Lightroom. I use The Turning Gate's fantastic Lightroom plug-ins to design and manage my website and I've been doing so for several years now.
So after a few years of looking at my site's old dark background, I finally got tired of it. So I've completely changed my website design using the CE4 version of the TTG plug-ins.
While the CE4 plug-ins have been out for a few months, it took me a bit of time to get around to actually redesigning my main site. Leading up to that redesign I used the CE4 plug-ins to create my TTG-Tips site as well as my new Workshops site. Both of these are WordPress based sites with themes created by TTG's Theme for WordPress plug-in.
Anyway, if websites or web design interests you, pop on over to my blog for more.
And if you're also using the TTG plug-ins and need some help, drop me a line and we can discuss having me design your site for you.

Recycling project
Speaking of new design, I've been going through some of the old articles on my site and converting them to blog posts. This has given me the opportunity to update those old articles and perhaps give them some new life. Not to mention make them look like they actually belong on a website rather than just some slapped together documents with pictures stapled to them

Do you know somebody with a new camera?
Know anybody who got a new camera for Christmas and is a bit lost with all those f-stops and fractions? How about you? Need a refresher on the basics of exposure?
Well, not only am I revamping my old articles in the wake of my site redesign, I've updated my Back to Basics series. It's a series of short lessons, each explaining one aspect of exposure. You'll learn about shutter speed, aperture, meters, and more.
You can find the Back to Basics series in the Lessons area of my newly redesigned website. Have I mentioned I just redesigned my website?

Auroras, those amazing auroras
Even though it's still early, the Northwest Territories aurora trip I'm leading this September with Victoria Dye is beginning to fill.
What I can tell you from our last trip is that every night is different. Some nights the auroras just go on and on. Other nights we had long lulls between frantic, but breathtakingly beautiful displays.

Some nights were better for reflections, others were better for silhouetting trees (or young and adventurous fellow photographers).
And the stars….all those stars; the Milky Way is gorgeous and worth photographing with or without the auroras.

This is one of those trips where you come away with so many amazing images that you have a tough time picking out your favorites.
But auroras aren't all we'll find. We'll visit lakes and waterfalls, parks with great fall color, and we'll check out the local color as well with excursions into Old Town Yellowknife.
So don't miss out. Visit our Aurora tour page for images and more details.

Other workshops
In addition to the aurora tour, there is still room in all my other workshops.
The Waterfalls of the Columbia Gorge is a great place to capture flowing water amongst lush greenery. Some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the northwest can be found in a relatively small area, and with relatively easy access too!
The Palouse region is one of those "must photograph" areas on many a shooter's bucket list. I've been going there for years and years and every year I seem to find something different. Could be that the light is always changing and the crops always moving. It's the perfect place for graphic landscapes, old barns, and quaint Americana. This year's workshop is a two-part affair, with part two being all about learning to use Lightroom to manage and edit your images.
Olympic National Park is also a two-part workshop. Olympic is another one of those "bucket list" destinations for photographers.

Oregon Coast

Just probing to see if there's any interest out there in an Oregon Coast workshop. This one would likely be based out of Newport, OR where we have access to three lighthouses, a marvelous harbor, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, crab pots, nets, buoys, crashing waves and more.
Victoria Dye and I are considering a Lightroom-centric workshop where we'd be spending our afternoons in the classroom learning Lightroom and spending the mornings and late afternoons photographing. It'll be a busy workshop, but we'd still leave you some time to visit the wine shops and the many fine restaurants.
So let me know if this sounds like something you'd like to join us on.
