Greetings,
I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The bathroom remodeling tunnel, that is. I'm nearly there. Oh, so close. Just a few more things.
The story of my life.
Anyway, between that and planning trips for next year and prepping pictures for a gallery I've been rather busy of late. And no, I'm not sharing any more pictures of the remodel until it's done.
But we did manage to take some time to escape the Halloween hordes in our neighborhood (all six of them, most likely) for a quick overnight in Seattle. Bailey has more about that here.

Triple D Utah in April

It's been awhile since I've run a workshop with the Triple D Game Farm but I'm thinking of adding a trip to my schedule and wanted to see if there might be some interest out there.
In case you've never heard of Triple D, it's a wildlife model game farm. It's a place you can go to get top-notch wildlife images. Often you'll be in the same enclosure as the animals, giving you the opportunity for some very intimate images.
Ever see a postcard of an adorable bobcat kitten? That wasn't taken in the wild, it was taken at a game farm. It's virtually impossible to get that shot in the wild. And if you try, you'll be disturbing the kitten as well as the mother, endangering not only yourself, but also the cats. This is why nearly all professional wildlife photographers who want those kinds of images will go to a game farm.
There are two things I really appreciate about working with Triple D. The first is the way they treat their animals. Their animals become family to Jay Deist (the owner) and his trainers, and are treated that way. The second is Jay's commitment to safety; both for his clients and his animals. He won't compromise on your safety in any way. This all makes for productive and fun photo sessions.
For the upcoming Utah trip we'll be based out of Hurricane, UT, and have at least eight photo sessions with professionally trained animals over a three day period with the option to add more. I'll be there to coach you too, offering suggestions on technique, composition, anticipation, lighting, and more.

Falling in love again
Back in the film days, my only wide angle landscape lens was my Nikon 24mm f/2.8D. We had many fine moments together. Like the time we hiked seven miles one way to photograph a field of wildflowers in front of Mt. Rainier. Or the time I actually injured my Xiphoid process while spread eagle over a stream to photograph the East Temple in Zion National Park. And how could I forget my first published image: a 24mm wide angle shot of a field of lupine on Hurricane Ridge with Mt. Olympus in the background. I loved looking at the world through 24mm eyes. Ahhh... memories…
Then digital came along with sensor sizes smaller than 35mm film and all of a sudden, my beloved 24mm lens wasn't so great for wide angle landscapes any more. I was sad. But then I got the Tokina 12-24 f/4 to satisfy my digital wide angle lust. But it wasn't the same. It's never the same.

Auroras in 2015
I'm hoping to have some news soon on the aurora photo trip Victoria Dye and I are planning for 2015. I'm still making arrangements but hopefully I'll have the trip posted in the next couple of weeks, maybe sooner. So don't be surprised if you get a mid-month mailing.
I've got a bit more on it here.

Using ALT key in Lightroom's Develop Module
Lightroom is pretty powerful, and I keep running into more and more things it will do. Why some of these are hidden I'll never know. Anyway, here's a handy list of some extra functionality you can get by simply holding down that magical ALT key (Option for you Mac users)

That's all for now. Please do let me know if you're interested in the Triple "D" workshop next April. It's really a lot of fun. Plus Zion is so tantalizingly close...
