December 2013 Rod Barbee Photography Newsletter
Greetings
Holiday Lights Happy Holidays!
Here we are, once again at the closing of another year.
I'd like to thank all of you for joining the mailing list and sticking with me thus far. I'd especially like to thank those of you who joined me on a workshop this past year, as well as those in years past. There are lots of workshops out there to choose from and I'm grateful you chose one (or more, in some cases!) of mine.
Think Tank's Black Friday (and beyond) sale

Just in time, Think Tank is running a special through the end of the year: Get a $50 rebate on any rolling bag plus free shipping on anything you order. More details on my blog.
2013 favorites

Unfortunately, I don't get out shooting as much as I'd really like to. What with the fact that I don't do a lot of photographing at workshops and all the doggy walks I'm committed to when at home, I'm just not making the needed time. So my selection of favorites is rather limited. But I've assemble a few into a small gallery on my blog.
Organizing your photos with Lightroom 5

Peter Krogh (The DAM Book) has released a new ebook devoted to showing you how to keep your images organized in Lightroom 5. It's over 200 pages and contains 7 hours of video. At $35 it's not cheap, but if it's as useful as The DAM Book, it would be money well spent for those having a tough time corralling their catalog.
I just found out about this ebook and haven't actually looked through it. If I do decide to get it, I'll write up a more thorough review. If any of you decide to buy it, let me know what you think of it.
For more, take a look at the table of contents.
Palouse special

Last year's Palouse/Lightroom combined workshops with my pal Victoria Dye (pictured at left) were a great success. Everyone nabbed some great images and learned a lot about using Lightroom. We even got lucky with the weather. The nasty/rainy days arrived during the Lightroom workshop while we were already indoors. Can't promise the same thing for next year's trip though.
And just for you, my beloved newsletter subscribers, until the end of the year we're offering a $50 discount on each Palouse workshop. If you sign up for both, you'll get $100 off the already discounted combined workshops.
Just send in a deposit before the end of the year and I'll include the discount on your invoice. You can send a check or even use a credit card though PayPal from my website, as I outline next.
New way to sign up for workshops

I've added another way to sign up for workshops. My preference is to receive checks, but I also realize that some people prefer to use credit cards (and collect those points!). Well now, you can sign up for workshops and using PayPal. And you don't need a PayPal account to use a credit card through PayPal. Each of my workshop pages has a Sign Up link that leads to my Sign Up page where you'll find sign up instructions as well as new Sign Up buttons for each workshop or tour. The payment choices include a deposit payment, payment in full and "other" payment. You can use the "other" payment button to make installment payments before the balance is due. I can add a balance due option too, based on the workshop price minus the minimum deposit.
If you prefer to use a credit card over the phone, I can handle that too, through the Square app on my iPad.
Winter to-do list victory!

Well, at least the first battle in the anticipated victory. Here is actual proof that I've actually started on an actual item in my perennial winter to-do list: start tossing slides from my two four-drawer filing cabinets full of slides that I haven't even looked at in, like, forever (in some cases, about 16 years).
Yep, I'm finally trimming down, cutting the fat, getting rid of that dead weight, shedding some pounds, emptying my drawers (filing cabinet drawers, that is).

And it feels good, like letting go of old habits or old hangups or that old Pink Floyd concert t-shirt that smells like musty closet and the bitter regrets of a misspent youth. It's liberating and a little mournful, but after looking at some of those pictures it's mostly an opportunity for me to shake my head and wonder just what the hell I was thinking.

And with that I bid you all happy holidays and a prosperous 2014. And thanks for being a subscriber. I hope you've found the newsletters helpful, informative, not too intrusive, and perhaps even mildly entertaining.
