Greetings
So once again I managed to get out of any Halloween duties. This time, like I've often done, I scheduled a workshop in Zion National Park. Pretty clever of me, if I do say so myself. Other times, Tracy and I have gone to the movies. Otherwise, we just turn the lights low and hunker down until all the horror has passed. Seriously though, we don't have many kids in the neighborhood so it's really not worth stocking up on candy and putting up with Bailey barking every time the doorbell rings. So we basically pull a Scrooge on Halloween. Or we're hiding from the monsters. Take your pick.
Zion report

I recently returned from the afformentioned Zion workshop. Fall color was pretty good in the canyon, though apparently, the previous week brought rain and wind, which helped to strip the trees of a few leaves. So the trees and color weren't as good as I'd seen them in the past. But that only means that I've seen the park in stupendous color rather than just the amazing color we had last week. We also made the early morning trek to Bryce Canyon to catch the sunrise on the hoodoos, some of which were adorned with snow.
I've posted a few of my pictures from the trip on my blog, just a few images taken with both my Nikon D300 and Canon G11.
On our last evening together, we had a group dinner at the Zion Canyon Brew Pub, located right next to The Cable Mountain Lodge where we were staying. On this particular night they had a singer/songwriter named Christina Osborn performing. And even though the volume made conversation a little difficult, her amazing voice and wonderful songs more than made up for it.
If you like folksy/blues music, check out her Facebook page. She's also trying to raise funds via Kickstarter to get her new album out. You can check that out here.
88 Secrets to Wildlife Photography sale

Until the end of the year you can pick up a copy of my 88 Secrets to Wildlife Photography, a book I co-authored several years ago, for $10. The retail price is $18.95 and I usually sell it for $16.95. And although it's a bit dated (I no longer use some of the equipment mentioned in the book and, of course, digital cameras and software have made huge advances), this book contains sound basic advice, including one of the best explanations of exposure that I've ever written
Tuscany with Don Mammoser

In May of 2014 Don Mammoser is once again leading a tour to Tuscany. From what I've heard from participants of last May's trip, this is a fun- and photo-filled tour. And the price is amazingly low and is all inclusive once you arrive. If I remember correctly, Don told me that he has only a few spaces remaining. If you do decide to sign up, mention to Don that I sent you; he'll then take extra special care of you.
New ThinkTank bag on its way

Take a look at this new camera bag from ThinkTank Photo. Well, it's actually from their sister company, MindShift Gear, and is slated for a January release. It's a pack designed with serious hikers in mind, what with an included hydration pocket and extra room for snacks, layers, gps, etc..
This looks like a good option for those who need to hoof it to their photo locations rather than working near the car.
Next year's trips

I know it might be a little early to start thinking of trips next summer or fall, but I did want to mention a few of the trips I've got coming up.
In May is my Columbia Gorge Waterfalls trip. I've limited the number of participants on this trip to seven.
In June I have the two-part Palouse workshop with Victoria Dye as well as a Grand Teton trip with Don Mammoser. In July there's the Colorado Mountains, also with Don Mammoser.
I've also got the fall trip to Canada's Northwest Territories for fall color on the tundra as well as wildlife and Auroras!

But the workshop I wanted to highlight is the Olympic National Park workshop with Don Mammoser, July 15-20. This one is already filling fast. If you're one of those who has expressed interest but has yet to make a deposit, I urge you go get a deposit in soon before you lose your space.

Parting words

That's all that's new that I can think of. For now. I'll be diving into my winter to-do list any day now. Yes I will. Gonna try to make a dent in all those slides that need to be tossed. And get some images off to potential buyers. And maybe even work on that pond I keep threatening to build. Might even add a workshop or two to the schedule.

The image above was taken at the Montinore Winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley last month. The winery tour is always a favorite of mine and is one I may be adding to next year's schedule. If you're interested, let me know.
