September 2013 Rod Barbee Photography Newsletter
Greetings
Another late newsletter. Sorry. Been busy with home projects (but not the pond, yet. Sorry) and enjoying this summer we've been handed here in the Pacific Northwest. Some of the old timers are saying it's the best we've had in years and years. I don't buy it. It seems to me that the summers back in the 60s and 70s lasted a lot longer. Wonder why that is. (and does that make me an old timer?)
Anyway, it's once again time for my monthly roundup of stuff I've found, stuff I'm doing, and stuff I'm going to do.
Photopills app

Many of you probably already have the Photographer's Ephemeris (PE), either as a desktop program or a mobile app. It's pretty valuable in helping to determine sun or moon locations and how they affect the landscape.
There's another iPhone/iPad app that does everything PE does and more. It's called Photopills and not only does it give you sun and moon information, it can give you the dates when the sun or the moon will be in the exact position you need them to be for a shot. It also has other utilities like a night photography calculator that will let you know the longest shutter speed you can use to get star points rather than having slightly blurry stars. It takes into account the camera used (crop factor), the lens used, and the minimum declination of the stars (how far above the horizon they are in degrees).
There's also a tool to help you visualize the length of star trails you'll get over a given time period. Add the hyperfocal tables, moon phases, time lapse tools, and more, and you've got yourself a pretty powerful toolkit for planning your shots. And you can even save the plans you create.
On top of this, the Photopills website if full of video tutorials to help get you up to speed with its many features. So be sure to check it out.
Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls

I've got next year's Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls trip posted to my workshops page. This is a limited space workshop running May 14-18. I've limited the number of participants to seven so that we'll be less likely to be in each other's photographs at some of the more space-limited locations we'll be visiting.
Based out of Cascade Locks, we'll be right in the best location at the best time of the year to experience the magnificent waterfalls of the Columbia Gorge. This is also a great area for some spectacular wildflower displays at the Tom McCall Preserve Nature Conservancy site.
Remember, there are only seven spaces available for this workshop.
Fall colors near the Arctic

It's not too early to start planning for next year's fall colors. Sure, you can go to the northeast US for fall color, but why not go some place where you can get color, wildlife, and auroras? Why not go to Canada's Northwest Territories?
Next September, Kevin Pepper and I are leading a workshop to one of the most pristine places on the planet.
Autumn in the Northwest Territories is mild, not sub-freezing temperatures. Yet. And no bugs; they'll be all gone. And this will be an adventure.
Olympic National Park 2014

This is always a popular workshop. But already, four of the 12 available spaces have been spoken for.
I'll be co-leading this trip with my friend Don Mammoser. We've both led many workshops to Olympic and this will be the first time we've led this trip together. Don often goes to different places in the park than I do and I go different places than he does, so this trip will have the best of both.
We'll be based out of Port Angeles (near the mountains) and Forks (near the coast and rainforest) so we'll be able to spend some quality time in both areas.
I'm expecting this workshop to sell out so claim your spot soon!

And be sure to check out my other trips as well, including the two-part Palouse-Lightroom workshop I'll again be leading with Victoria Dye.

TTG updates

If you're a user of the TTG line of Lightroom web module plug-ins, there is news. TTG Cart CE3 is now available. Technically, this isn't even a Lightroom plug-in, like the CE2 version was. This one is completely web-based and interfaces with supporting TTG CE3 plug-ins (currently only CE3 Gallery).
This new version is even more flexible than the old version and also allows for selling and instant delivery of digital downloads.

Also, the recently released TTG CE3 Theme for Wordpress is getting even more features. Version 2.1.0 is still in development but you can get a peak at one of the new features, Galleria slide show support, here on my blog.

End of summer

Seriously, one of these days I'm going to get that pond done. I know, I keep threatening to do it. But somehow I keep getting distracted. Whether it's sanding a trellis so it can be re-stained (left-with "pond" in the background. Sort of.) or refinishing exterior doors, or learning css, html5, javascript or other nerdy web design stuff.

refinishing Speaking of doors, I need to get back outside and do some more sanding while this legendary summer still lingers.

Left: refinishing in progress
