Atop Hurricane Ridge during my recent Olympic National Park workshop, I ran into fellow photographer Gary Luhm. I know Gary from the Seattle Mountaineers photography group. In one of his latest blog posts, Gary makes some excellent points about the value of scouting locations. You can read his blog post here.

This looks like a good deal. I already have plenty of packs, but this Camera Strap and Support Kit looks so handy that I just ordered one of each!
Our friends at Think Tank Photo just announced a special offer for August. With this offer, when you order any of their highly-regarded photography backpacks you will receive for free their Camera Strap and Support Kit. This combination Camera Strap V2.0 plus Camera Support Strap shifts the weight of your camera and lens from your neck to the backpack's frame, thus reducing stress on your neck and shoulders. |

The list is coming along. I've got some firm dates and I've posted some of the trips on my website. More are on the way.
First off, I've scheduled my Columbia River Gorge Waterfall workshop for May 14-18, 2014. Because some of the areas we go into are kind of space limited, being in a big group can be frustrating. So I'm limiting this trip to no more than seven. Next year's two-part Palouse trip with Victoria Dye is scheduled for June. Part 1, shooting the Palouse, will be June 23-27. Part 2, Lightroom, will be June 27-30.
Don Mammoser and I have three trips planned for 2014. Grand Tetons (June 17-21), Colorado's San Juan Mountains (July 8-12), and Olympic National Park (July 15-20). Though I'll have all three of these trips posted to my website, you'll need to sign up for the Tetons and the Colorado trip through Don's site. Once I get those posted I'll have more information on that. |

Matt at The Turning Gate recently released his latest: CE3 Theme for Wordpress. This new version offers a lot more flexibility. Not only can you create a simple blog with it, you can also use it, in combination with a couple of other TTG plug-ins to create an entire site.
You can read more about it on my own blog. |

Maybe I'm speaking too soon, but I do plan on finishing my pond this summer. But first, I have a few other yard projects to take care of, like replacing some sprinklers and some valves in our underground sprinkler system. I'll also probably need to move some sprinklers around seeing as they were put in place before we moved here (wow, it's been nearly 13 years) and Tracy has pretty much redesigned most of the yard in all that time. So now there are several sprinklers in places where they're not as effective as they could be. Of course, this is all just another excuse for me to by another tool, in this case, a trenching shovel. Exciting, huh?
At any rate, I'll be getting right on that pond. For sure this time.
Really.
I'm not kidding.

For those of you who've shown some interest in next year's Northwest Territories trip (auroras!), I've added a bit of information to the page for this tour.
For those of you saying "Huh?, what Northwest Territories trip?", well, check out the link below. We'll be photographing fall color; critters like bears, and birds, and foxes; and auroras. Yep, autumn is prime time for auroras. And you won't even have to freeze your "you-knows" off to see them. |

Lightroom 5 has a valuable new addition to the Spot Removal tool. It's called Visualize Spots and it helps you to see spots. Now usually, if you're seeing spots this is a bad sign and you should get to your doctor right away. But in this case, seeing spots will actually improve your health by alleviating frustration and preventing headaches.

That's it for now. With any luck, I'll have some actual pictures of an actual yard project next month. Until then, you'll have to be satisfied with this picture of Bailey that Tracy took on her iPad and sent to me during one of my trips away from home.
