Greetings
Hi all. Summer's nearly over and leaves are beginning to fall. Fall has always been my favorite time of the year. I like the cooler weather, I love seeing the colors change, and I'm ecstatic that the bugs are going away. It's also time to think of fall photography. And if you're still looking for a fall destination that's a little bit different, consider Oregon's Willamette Valley wine country. Just so happens we still have openings in our Photo Tour.
If you're interested, follow that link or go to my website and click on the Workshops Page link.

But the wine country isn't the only area that has fall color photography potential. The Portland Japanese Gardens are great in the fall and the nearby Colombia Gorge waterfalls are, in some ways, at their best. You'll find fall color and, with the lower water levels, the streams are more accessible. This means more interesting compositions because you can find more interesting angles. Plus the waterfalls still look great.
Another nearby destination is Silver Falls State Park. Boasting 10 waterfalls (five or six are really worth photographing) and easy access, this park should be on any waterfall lovers list. There should be some fall color there too, as the park is full of big leaf maples.

2011 Workshop Schedule

I've got a few workshops for 2011 posted on the Workshops Page of my website. This is just a start, as I'll be adding more in the next few weeks or so. Note that most dates are tentative: I'm still working on arranging hotels and whatnot.
New for next year are a couple of Digital Workflow workshops I'm doing with my friend Victoria Dye. If you already know Victoria, you know that she's a great teacher and has a quirky sense of humor. She's a lot of fun to be around and she knows Lightroom. She's been teaching it for some time now and this will be a great chance to learn and practice using Lightroom in a real, practical environment. After each day's morning shoot we'll be in the classroom learning how to import, manage, adjust, and output our images. Since we'll be doing this every day you'll get a lot of chances to repeat and practice all the techniques and tools of Lightroom that we'll cover. One of these workshops will be base out of Moab, UT and we'll visit Arches and Canyonlands. The other workshop will be in Washington's Palouse region.

I've also scheduled a Death Valley field workshop with my friend Shellye Poster, who literally wrote the book on Death Valley: The Photographer's Guide to Death Valley. Shellye lives in Death Valley and also works for the National Park Service. I think it's pretty safe to say that she knows the park as well as anybody and better than most. Plus she's a darn fine photographer.
Next September I'll be co-leading an Oregon Coast workshop out of Newport, Oregon with my friend Bob Stahl. Bob is actually the first photo instructor I ever had when I started learning about photography waaaayyy back in 1990 or so. Bob has worked with National Geographic and has been teaching nature photography a long, long time. His approach is more Zen-like, whereas mine is more technical. You'll learn a lot from Bob as well as be inspired by his outlook on photography and life.

Bon Voyage Don

You might have noticed that I don't have any workshops scheduled with my pal Don Mammoser. That's because Don is taking a year off (at least) to travel around the world. Don is an adventurer at heart and can take off on his own with no real plan or agenda, just taking things as they come and meeting people on the way. I envy him that sometimes. Anyway, I wish him the best of luck and hope he has a great time and meets wonderful people. I'm looking forward to hearing the stories and seeing the pictures.
Summer projects

Hey, remember last month when I told you about my latest backyard project? Well, it's done. Well, mostly. Some finishing touches are still needed. Anyway, you can see the progression of the project here (see if you can spot Bailey in one of the pictures). This gallery was made in Lightroom and it was really, really easy to do (the gallery, not the backyard work). And my back survived. I figured I'd have built up lots of spousal points for this and would be off the hook for awhile. I was mistaken. A couple of days ago I began the epic tearing up of the front yard. Not out of anger, no. We're replacing our anemic, moss infested lawn. Can moss infest? So that will keep me busy (and sore, and complaining) for the next few days.
Cancelling the Zion trip

Due to lack of interest (and the fact that Utah is so stinking far away), I'm cancelling my Zion National Park Semi-private tour. I'll try to put a couple more of these limited-space, lower priced-trips together for next year. I may even put together an exploratory trip to some place like Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which is a place I've been want to visit for fall color for a long time now.
Back to work

Guess I've put it off long enough. I don't have anything to add so I guess I better get to work on that lawn project. Oh well.
