ASMP has just published a new website designed to
help photographers adopt the best, most efficient
practices for digital photography: dpBestFlow.org
Everything you ever wanted to know about image editing workflow, archiving, monitor types and calibration, computers for photography, software choices, keywording. You name it, it seems to be all here. You'll even find video tutorials. And it's all free and well worth checking out. |

Have you ever wanted to bring your spouse along
when you take a photo workshop but were worried
they'd be bored or wouldn't be able to find anything to
do while the group was out shooting or in the
classroom? Well the very location out of which this
PAW workshop is based offers the perfect
answer.
Next June, Moe Witschard and David Middleton are leading a Montana Rocky Mountain Front workshop based out of Great Falls, MT. You'll photograph wildflowers, rivers, wildlife and towering mountains. The workshop is based out of the Pine Butte Guest Ranch, which also offers a dude ranch program with horse back riding, hiking, fishing and much more, and would be perfect for a spouse or friend who wants to come along on the trip but isn't into photography the same way you are. If you do sign up, be sure to let PAW know I referred you. You can put the reference code Rod100 in the "Comments" or "Hear about PAW" part of the online registration form. |

I know, winter hasn't even officially started yet and I'm
already talking about spring. But it's never too early to
plan next year's photo outings. And a good way to start
would be to sign up for one or both of these
workshops with me and Don Mammoser. As we're
running them back to back, if you sign up for both
you'll get a $100 total discount.
The Slot Canyons workshop is April 13- 18 and the Arches worskhop is April 18-22. Spring in the southwest is a great antidote to the winter doldrums. Flowers blooming, sun shining, warm days (but not too warm) and the sunrise doesn't come horrifically early. |

Lately I've been looking into having some cards made
and possibly making some larger display prints. Other
photographers have told me about White House
Custom Color so I decided to try them out.
After you open an account, the next step is to send in five files for test prints (this is free), just to make sure that the prints they make come out looking as good as the images on your monitor. You must have a calibrated monitor for this to work otherwise you're just wasting your time.
So I uploaded the five files and a couple of days later
the test prints arrived. Here's what I can tell you: If you
have a correctly calibrated monitor, the colors of the
WHCC prints will match your images on your monitor
very, very well. I was impressed. |

As you may recall if you've been getting this newsletter
for awhile, last year after some workshops got
cancelled I was able to offer some trips for a limited
number of people at a very reasonable price. Based
on the popularity of those trips, I've decided to offer a
limited number of low-
cost, limited participation, no-frills photo tours to
places I know well.
This will be a good chance for a few people to photograph a great location in its prime time with only a few other folks. And me, of course. I'll also be photographing, but my main purpose will be to help you get the best pictures you can.
I haven't made any firm plans yet but a couple of the
locations I'm thinking about are Oregon's Columbia
Gorge waterfalls and northern coast in late spring and
Zion National Park in the fall. |

Here's wishing that everyone has a great holiday
season and a prosperous new year. If you've been
thinking of getting that new camera or new lens or
new printer, then I say go for it. Then tell me what you
bought so I can get a vicarious thrill!
