Greetings
Last week it seemed like we were having a resurgence of summer. Sunny days, temperatures in the mid-60s, just beautiful.
And all of a sudden, we're right into fall with a hint of winter. It's getting colder and crisper and soon it will be wetter. But the last day of really great weather was also a really great day for my Seattle Seahawks, who trounced the Panthers 41- 0, which, after three straight losses was very welcome indeed.
The Spirit Bear

"Magnificent wildlife in a landscape of jaw dropping beauty. One of the most memorable experiences I have had as a photographer. I will go back".
That's what my friend Dick Badger said about what sounds to me to be one of the best wildlife photo trips you could ever take. He was a participant last month on Paul Burwell's Spirit Bear Tour along the coast of British Columbia.
The Spirit Bear is a black bear with white fur. That trait comes from a recessive gene and about 10% of the black bears in the region have this trait.

If you want to know more about this tour or put in a word to Paul about signing up for his next trip, visit his Wildlife Photography Academy. Paul also leads trips for Photographers Alliance Workshops so be sure to check the PAW site for some of his other trips.

2010 workshops

Don Mammoser and I have posted our 2010 workshop schedule. We'll be doing three workshops together next year: Slot Canyons/Monument Valley April 13-18, Arches National Park April 18-23, and Fall Color in the Colorado Mountains Sept.28 to Oct 2. And if you sign up by the end of this year, were offering a $100 combined discount for those signing up for both the Slot Canyons/Monument Valley and Arches National Park workshops.

Don and I haven't done the Slot Canyons/Monument Valley trip for a couple of years and we're looking forward to going back. So if you've been waiting to visit this very scenic part of the country, here's your chance. This workshop has filled quickly in the past so don't wait too long.

More workshops

I'll be leading several workshops next year for Photographers Alliance Workshops. The Yosemite workshop has now been posted to the PAW site. In addition, I'll be leading workshops to Washington's Palouse farmland in the spring (I understand that this one is already filling), Olympic National Park (my backyard), and Mt. Rainier National Park (an American icon).
I plan on adding an autumn Zion National Park trip to the PAW schedule, so stay tuned.

I've also scheduled a workshop to Bandon on the Oregon Coast with Great American Photography Workshops. I'll be leading this workshop with Matt Kloskowski from the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Matt is a Photoshop/Lightroom expert and will lecturing on everything digital.
Bandon, one of my favorite areas, probably has the best collection of photogenic sea stacks on the Oregon Coast. We'll also be photographing lighthouses (there are three in the general area), crashing waves, nets and harbors, a beautiful formal garden, and more. I'm still waiting for GAPW to finalize the dates and post their 2010 schedule, but I've penciled in May 26-30. This will be a great opportunity to photograph one of the best places on the Oregon Coast and get some of the best Photoshop/Lightroom instruction anywhere. As soon as I know exactly when this workshop will be I'll let you know.

New toy

Ok, so I can be a gadget geek. For years now I've loved my iPod; all my music, podcasts, audio books, and other stuff always with me. Everything I though I ever needed.
About two weeks ago I got the new iPod Touch. Geek heaven. Not only do I have my music and podcasts like before, but now I have even better video. And internet via wi-fi! But the best part has to be the Apps (iPod/iPhone geek-speak for Applications). There are Apps for just about anything you can think of. And for us nature photographers there is a ton of great Apps full of invaluable information. You can get Apps that will tell you sunrise/sunset times and azimuth, great for planning sunrise and sunset shoots. There are tide table Apps, especially useful for coastal photography. There are Apps for birders, for plant lovers, and of course, there are photography Apps. There's even one that allows you to remotely control your camera. Amazing.

And of course, it allows me to keep Bailey with me at all times.
