Greetings
Well, after a record heat wave we're finally back to my kind of weather, cool and drizzly. On one afternoon a couple of weeks ago, the thermometer on our back deck read 106 degrees in the shade. Yikes. Very hot for this part of the country.

Last week the weather was a bit more normal for August and my workshop group got to experience Mt. Rainier National Park at its very best.

Rainer report.

Any of you reading this who live in Washington State owe it to yourselves to get up to Paradise at Mt. Rainier and see this year's flower display. It was at its peak last week and I imagine it will still be pretty good for the next week or so.

I just finished up a workshop at Rainier and I think we all got some great images. Tipsoo Lake was beautiful and the flowers there plentiful. The flowers at Paradise were the best I've ever seen.
I had a pretty small group so we got to spend plenty of time working on technique, especially using graduated neutral density filters, something you definitely need while photographing Mt. Rainier.

PAW Oregon Coast openings

There are still a couple of openings in the Photographers Alliance workshop David Middleton and I are leading on the Oregon Coast, based out of Newport, OR. This is one of our favorite locations. If you like lighthouses, harbors, beaches, nets and other fishing gear, you'll love Newport. We'll also visit the fantastic Oregon Coast Aquarium. Here you can photograph puffins and oystercatchers up close in an open aviary. And if you're a fan of tide pool photography, you'll find one of the best, most natural and easy to photograph tide pool displays you'll ever see.
We'll spend mid-days in the classroom critiquing images, demonstrating image processing techniques and answering your digital image editing questions.

The workshop is September 9-13. You can get all the information here.

Other PAW offerings

Photographers Alliance Workshops is offering several workshops to great locations through the end of the year. Don Mammoser and I still have room in our Zion National Park workshop at the end of October.

Interested in Glacier National Park? The fall is a great time to visit Glacier (less crowded, no bugs, fall color). Moe Witschard is leading a trip for PAW Sept 30-October 4. Click here for more details.
How about Death Valley? Death Valley is one of my favorite photo destinations. It's a fantastic place for dramatic and graphic landscapes. Moe is also leading a workshop to Death Valley this November. Check it out here.

Other workshops this fall include the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Coastal Maine, Bosque del Apache, and more. Visit the PAW site for the full listing.
And if you're wondering what a PAW workshop will be like, visit the FAQ page here.

Fractalius

At a recent workshop one of the participants showed us some of her images that she enhanced using a pretty cool filter. Fractalius is a Photoshop plug-in filter that creates effects that are "based on extraction of so- called hidden fractal texture of an image."
This is a fun filter to play with. You can really create some very original, very appealing works of art with this $40 filter. Using filters like this isn't something I do often but it certainly is fun to see what you can do. And if you're the type who enjoys exploring what you can do with your images, this filter should be right up your alley. You can download the demo version for free here.
Home projects: the walkway

So it's been awhile since I "finished" the bathroom remodeling project. I say "finished" because I never for one minute believe I'm actually finished. Anyway, with August here and a few weeks between workshops, I'll have some time to get going on some yard projects. I've already put in a short walkway under one of gates leading to the backyard. That was during our recent 100 degree weather heat wave a couple of weeks ago. I know, real smart of me. But it was a good start and we've got more walkway and other landscaping ideas percolating. I've also got a few other things on my list like moving underground sprinklers, and capping off the fence I built last year. (Ok, I had help with the fence. Ok, so I was the one helping the guy we hired to build the fence. At least give me some credit, I did manage to injure my knee during the project.)
Newsletter archives always available

For those of you relatively new to the newsletter, you can always check out past missives by visiting my website and clicking on Newsletter Archives. Relive the days of the great bathroom remodeling, see some pictures of my grandson, or check out how Bailey the labradoodle has grown. Oh, and there might be a few posting actually related to photography.
CO Fall Color

Last I heard, Don Mammoser and I still have plenty of space available for out Colorado Fall Color workshop.
Hillsides of aspens, brilliant blue skies, Colorado at its finest. We've also reduced the price so this is a great chance to photograph the Colorado mountains in all their fall color glory.
