Greetings
Hi everybody. The Seattle Mariners open their season tonight. After the last few seasons I don't have real high expectations for this year. Apparently Ichiro's a little nervous too, seeing as how he's out with a bleeding ulcer. Yikes! These low expectations can only mean that I'll most likely be pleasantly surprised. At least that's my expectation...

I also still have a small case of PBSGD (Post- Battlestar Galactica Depression). For those of you who watched this amazing show (NOT the one from the 1970s, the new one) over the last four years or so, you know what I mean (perhaps the best TV show EVER!).

Anyway, at least Spring is here: flowers starting to bloom, bugs starting to do what bugs do, and hummingbirds practicing their dive bombing techniques. Boy, but those suckers come close.

Price reduction on CO Wildflowers workshop

We know times are tough, so Don Mammoser and I are reducing the price of our July 7-11 Colorado Wildflowers workshop from $995 to $895. For those who have already signed up, this difference will be reflected in your statements.

This workshop include a full-day and a half-day jeep tour, which were a popular highlight of last year's trip.

Singh-Ray Blog

My latest blog posting for Singh-Ray's Focus on Singh- Ray Filters Blog has been posted. This one is about photographing the vineyards of Oregon's Willamette Valley. Take a look here.
I'll also be evaluating Singh-Ray's Color-Combo filter soon. This filter is a combination of their Lighter- Brighter polarizer along with their Color Intensifier. I'll pass on my impressions in a future newsletter.
PAW Oregon coast workshop nearly full

For any of you contemplating attending this fall's Oregon Coast Shoot and Process workshop with David Middleton and me (Sept. 9-13) , I've just heard that this workshop is nearly full.
This workshop's a little different from what David and I usually do. Not only will be helping you in the field capturing images, we'll then go into the classroom and help you process the images using various tools including Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw, and Lightroom. We'll also talk about organizing and managing your growing image collection. Visit the PAW site for more information and to sign up.
PAW ad in OP

Keep an eye out for the May, June, and July issues of Outdoor Photographer magazine. Photographer's Alliance Workshops will be running our first ad starting in May. Hopefully this will give us the visibility to make PAW a successful venture.
Taking control of your images with masks

I've written a new tutorial article on using Channels in Photoshop for creating and using masks.
A simple, yet sophisticated mask can be made from one of the three channels: Red, Green, and Blue. If you look at the channels palette you'll see the gray scale representations of each color channel. Remember, in a layer mask, white reveals and black conceals, and shades of gray reveal to a varying extend. So these channels can be used as layer masks.
Showing off

And finally, here's my grandson Parker proving to the world that he does indeed have a bellybutton!
