August 2008 Rod Barbee Photography Newsletter
Greetings
I can't believe August is nearly over. Before I know it, I'll be 48 years old (my birthday is coming up).
In the last few days we've gone from some of the hottest days of the year to some of the coolest, wettest days of this summer. I guess that's just our wacky northwest weather.
More Home Projects

So once again I'm a little late with the newsletter. It's getting to be a habit. But I've got a really good excuse. Really. I was working on yet another home related project. And this was a big one: I built a fence! About 300 feet worth of fence.

Ok, so I helped the guy we hired to build the fence. But still, it was a lot of work and I dug a lot of holes and poured lots of cement. And I have the sore muscles and other maladies to prove it! We replaced our old fence and also fenced in our lot next door. The accompanying picture shows a remnant of our old fence with a section of the new.

Profiling Your Camera

Last year I wrote briefly about a script you can use with Photoshop and Camera Raw to calibrate your camera. I have yet to actually get around to using it however. But if you're interested in calibrating your own camera there are a couple of script sources out there including the one at Chromoholics.

Now there's this from PhotoshopNews.com:

"Adobe has released new beta camera profiles for Camera Raw 4.5 and Lightroom 2.0 as well as a beta of the new application called DNG Profile Editor for editing DNG profiles. The betas of the profiles and the editor app are on Adobe Labs."
There is also the new DNG Profile Editor. Using this tool you can open a DNG file (you'll have to convert the raw images from your camera to Adobe's DNG format) and tweak the colors to your heart's desire. You can then save this "recipe" and output it as a new camera profile. Pretty cool.
You can also photograph a Gretagmacbeth Color Checker and use the "chart" tab in the DNG Profile Editor to create your own camera profiles.

Image Critique Service

Lately I've had several requests from workshop participants to offer online or email critiques of images. Not to be one to turn down potential income, I'm now offering an image critique service.
For $10/image, with a five image minimum, I'll give an honest evaluation of images along with suggestions for improvement (if applicable) or groans of envy (also if applicable).
For the complete rundown, including method of payment and image size specifications, visit my Image Critique page.
Workshop News

Don Mammoser and I are taking deposits for next year's workshops. These include Yosemite, Glacier, and two trips to Colorado for summer scenes and flowers as well as fall color. We may even be adding more. And, there are still spaces available in our Zion National Park workshop.

Also, there are a few spots open in the Wineries of Oregon's Willamette Valley photo tour I'm leading with my friend Dick Badger. Visit my workshops page for details.

In Closing

That's it for now. Next week we're having a couple of guests staywith us; we'll be dog sitting for a couple of Tracy's friends. I hope Bailey enjoys the company. She'll finally be able to really be Queen of the Yard.
