Greetings
Whew! I've finally finished the tiling and grouting on that darn shower. I think it looks pretty good. And it was a valuable learning experience. And I got to buy some new tools. And I got to make a lot of messes. And next time----

Anyway, I've added a new photo tour to this year's schedule and I've found a couple of great Photoshop tips to pass along.

Photo Tour of Oregon's Wineries

In 1979 David Lett entered his Oregon Pinot noir in the Gaul-Millau French Wine Olympiads. He won against France's best Pinots and, as a result, the world became aware of the superior wines from Oregon's Willamette Valley.
Today there are hundreds of fine wineries in the Willamette Valley and this October 20-24, Dick Badger and I are leading a photographic tour of some of these fine wineries. Besides producing great wines, these wineries are also quite photogenic. We'll have the chance to photograph vineyards at sunrise as well as grape bunches, colorful leaves, workers picking and processing grapes, and more.

This is a photo tour as opposed to a workshop so, while I'll be photographing too, I'll be available to help with whatever you need.
Late October is also a fine time to visit both the Columbia River Gorge waterfalls and Silver Falls State Park, both of which are less than two hours away.

More Great Photoshop Techniques

I've mentioned Tony Kuyper's valuable Luminosity Masks and Saturation Masks tutorials and actions before here and here.
Well, Tony has added a couple new tut orials. If you've ever had a frustrating cloning experience (I'm talking Photoshop, not genetic engineering) you'll want to read Tony's Cloning Color, Retaining Texture tutorial. And if you've ever lusted after those view camera movements that allow the photographer to change the plane of focus (called the Scheimpflug Principal), Tony has a short e-book on how to do this with your digital slr camera (no expensive tilt/shift lens needed).
Back Up Now, Back Up Often

I've mentioned before the need to back up your images and other important document before something very, very bad happens to your hard drive. If you're not backing up your images then I wish you the best of luck. You'll need it.
My recommendation for backing up is to get yourself some external USB 2.0 or Firewire hard drives. You can find 500 Gigabyte hard drives for around $100 these days so there's no excuse to not invest in this cheap insurance for your precious digital images.

I also mentioned the backup program I'm using, Genie Backup Manager Pro 8.0, which just won PC Magazine's Editors' Choice. You can read a rather thorough review of GBM Pro 8.0 right here.

Redwoods and Oregon Coast workshops

I understand that there are still some openings in the two workshops I'm doing this year with David Middleton through Great American Photography Workshops: Redwoods and the Oregon Coast.
David's just about the best workshop instructor I know and we always have a lot of fun on our workshops. If you're interested, give Rhonda at GAPW a call at 1-866-747-GAPW (4279)
Other Workshop Openings

There are also openings in some of my other workshops this year, including The Palouse, Oregon Waterfalls, Olympic National Park, Slot Canyons, and Zion National Park.
Visit my workshops page for details.
Don's New Book is Now Available

My friend and teaching partner Don Mammoser has a new book, The Photographer's Guide to the Colorado Rockies. If you've read any of these guides you know how valuable they can be (As you know, I've written two of these myself.)
This is a great series of books for photographers living in or visiting a specific area.

Don's books are now available at his website, so if you know Don, or you're going to be photographing in Colorado any time soon, click on over to Don's site and check it out.
