Greetings
Sorry this is so late. I returned a couple of weeks ago from Patagonia and have been getting caught up.
And no, the shower tiling job is not quite done yet, but it's oh so close. So close.
Patagonia trip

As promised, I've put together a gallery of images from my recent trip to Patagonia. They span from Buenos Aires and El Calafate, Argentina, to the national parks in Patagonia on both the Argentinean and Chilean sides, to the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
All in all, it was a great trip. The light didn't cooperate as we would have liked and we had several sunrise and sunset shoots where pesky horizon hugging clouds made an appearance, essentially ruining what would have otherwise been the most spectacular sunrise or sunset in the history of all photography. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Speaking of next time, it looks like I'll be going back with David Muench and Jack Dykinga again in April of 2009. This trip will also be through Distinctive Journeys. I should have details soon.
I must say that we ate well. The beef in Argentina is all you may have heard about. And the wines---hmmmm---Malbec.

Triple "D" Mariposa opening

Don Mammoser and I have had a late cancellation in our Triple "D" Mariposa workshop, April 14-18. This workshop also has the option of participating in the "Day at the Ranch" shoot, one of Triple D's most popular events.
If you're interested in taking the spot, please contact me as soon as you can. All the contact info is at the bottom of this newsletter.
John Shaw's Photoshop CS3 Guide

As I often get asked to suggest good books on Photoshop, I consider it my solemn duty to read and evaluate every single book on Photoshop that's out there.
Yeah, right.
But I do have a few Photoshop books, and one that I recenlly bought is John Shaw's Photoshop CS3 Guide e- book ($30). If you've ever read any of John's other books you already know that he's a great writer who can take complex topics and make them easy to understand. This e- book is no different.
This is not a book on every tool in Photoshop. This is not a book about how to take a moose from one picture and put it on the back of an elephant in another picture. This is a book about using the tools in Photoshop that are most useful for the nature photographer. In this book, John talks about the tools he uses in his own imaging.

For those of you new or relatively new to Photoshop, John covers a lot of the basics. And for those of you who are relatively adept at using Photoshop, you'll probably find techniques and tools you may have not been familiar with. I know I did.
Besides the basics, like setting up Photoshop, using Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw, tools, palettes, and workflow, John covers such useful tools and techniques such as Adjustment Layers, masks, and blending images.
This book can be a great introduction to Photoshop as well as very useful addition to any Photoshop books you may already have. You can buy it directly from John at his website.

Upcoming workshops

Don and I still have spaces available in both our Slot Canyons/Monument Valley workshop (Sept. 23-28) and our Zion National Park workshop Oct. 28- Nov. 1).

September is a great time to visit the Monument Valley and Slot Canyons. The Rabbitbrush will be in bloom and since school will be back in session, the slots should be less crowded.
The slot canyons offer some of the most beautiful and surreal landscapes on the planet. If you're an outdoor/nature enthusiast photographer you simply have to experience these canyons, and if you're a nature photographer, you'll definitely want these images in your portfolio.
In Monument Valley we'll have Navajo guides to take us into areas where the general public is not allowed. Monument Valley is the location of the quintessential Western landscape. Exceptional light, towering mesas, and incredible colors make this a must see, must photograph destination. We're also working on a possible special add-on to this workshop.

And the fall is one of the best times to visit Zion National Park. Fall color and red rock are hard to beat.

Final note

Well, back to tiling the shower. I'm thinking that today could be the day that I finish laying the tile. Then it's just grouting and sealing and I'll FINALLY be done.
But don't hold your breath.
