January 2008 Rod Barbee Photography Newsletter
Greetings
Happy New Year everybody. Sorry I'm so late with this month's newsletter. I do have excuses but they're not all that good.
Welcome Parker John Barbee

First of all, I have to announce the birth of my first grandchild. (I know, I don't look old enough to be a grandpa, and believe me, I agree with that). Parker John Barbee was born on Dec. 31st to my son Tracey and his fiancée Tiffany.
I don't know if I'll be able to post as many pictures of Parker as I do of Bailey (our dog), but I'll try.
Wonderful Winter Wildlife

I just got back from leading a wildlife photography workshop at Triple "D" in Montana. The animals looked wonderful and the conditions were just about perfect. The snow leopards alone are worth the trip, and we also were able to photograph cougars, three types of fox, Canada lynx, wolves, a grizzly cub, a bobcat, and a Siberian tiger. All in the snow and all in their best winter coats.
I'll try to post a small gallery of images in the next week or so.
Southwest in the Fall

As you may already know, Don Mammoser and I are leading a pair of workshops to the Southwest this fall. Sept. 23-28 we'll be going to the Slot Canyons in Page, AZ and Monument Valley.
Oct. 28 to Nov. 2 we'll be going to Zion National Park (one of my favorite places).

Both of these locations are very scenic and we'll be concentrating mainly on landscape techniques and working with the light as well as incorporating graphics and your own vision into your landscape work. We've begun taking registrations for both these workshops, and though right now there is still plenty of room in both, we do expect them to fill. For more information, visit the workshops page of my website.

More wildlife

Even though our Mariposa Triple "D" workshop in April is sold out, there are still openings in some of the other sessions Triple "D" is offering. Last I heard Jay has openings in sessions 1,2,5,6. Check the Triple "D" website for exact dates and call Kathleen or Jay at 406-755-9653 for more information and to sign up.
Still working on it...

And for those of you still remotely interested in the progress of our bathroom remodel, I'm getting close to being done. Really. I just have to finish tiling the shower floor and a couple of small, built-in shelves in the shower. I may even be done before I leave next month for Patagonia.
Patagonia

Speaking of Patagonia, I'll be there in less than a month. Wow, that came up fast. I'll be bringing a Nikon D300 and D200 with me as well as lenses ranging from 12mm to 200mm. I may even bring my 300mm if I can fit it all in.
I'll also be bringing a range of filters along from polarizers to graduated neutral density filters to a Singh-Ray vari-nd and Singh-Ray Color Intensifier.

I have of course seen pictures from Patagonia so I can somewhat imagine what it will be like. I only hope I can get some good light opportunities and come back with a few "portfolio" quality images.
Since I'll be travelling with two of the world's landscape masters (David Muench and Jack Dykinga) I should be able to pick up some insight from them and I'll be sure to pass those along in some future article.

Until next month

I'll try to get the February newsletter out in a more timely fashion. Until then, if you're into football, enjoy the playoffs (sadly, my Seahawks lost last weekend). If you're into Presidential politics, enjoy the caucuses and primaries.
