Greetings
Here we go again. Winter is back. If you haven't seen the news or you don't live in the Pacific Northwest, you may not have heard of the wild weather we just went through.
First, we got our first snowfall of the season. Here at home we ended up with four or five inches. As you can guess, our dog Bailey was thrilled; snow is just about her favorite thing.

The snow was followed with lots and lots and lots of rain and lots and lots and lots of wind. Which resulted in all the unbelievable pictures you've probably seen on tv.
As much as Bailey liked the snow, she didn't like the wind or rain. This is mainly due to the power going out. She freaks out every time that happens. But we seem to be back to normal for now. I'm sure there will be more to come.

Updates to Photoshop, Bridge, and ACR

If you haven't heard, there's been a substantial update to Photoshop CS products, including Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw. To get the updates, open Photoshop or Bridge, go to Help and click on Updates.
One of the things that got fixed was the problem with printing from Photoshop. Often prints would be printed off center by quite a ways. Anyway, take a look at this PDF document from Adobe that explains the fixes and what you need to do.
Real World Camera Raw

The folks at Real World have come out with yet another great book on Adobe Camera Raw. This book covers the latest version of ACR, version 4 (actually it covers 4.1). Author credits go to Jeff Schewe and the late Bruce Fraser.
This book covers not only all the controls you'll find, but how and why to use them and how they can interact with each other.
For example, version 4 of ACR added some very powerful sharpening controls. Sharpening in ACR should be used as "capture sharpening". In other words, use it restore sharpness lost during the digital capture process. This book explains those controls and how best to use them.

But this book isn't just about using ACR, it's about workflow and how to evaluate your images and time saving tips on processing. The authors cover Bridge as well as how to exploit the automation features found in Bridge and Photoshop.
You'll also find detailed instructions on how to calibrate your own digital camera in ACR, including a web address where you can download a script to automate the calibration process.
All in all, if you're using Photoshop CS3, Bridge, and especially Adobe Camera Raw, this book is invaluable.

Winter Wildlife

Last I heard, there are still three spaces available for my January 12-15 Winter Wildlife workshop at Triple "D". Winter's always a fun time to shoot. Late sunrise, early sunset, plenty of time for sleep and wine drinking....but I digress.

If your portfolio is in need of winter wildlife images, this is a great opportunity to photograph cougar, wolf, coyote, bobcat and more. Did I mention snow leopards?
So if you're interested, give Jay or Kathleen a call at 406-755-9653 or visit the Triple "D" website.

Southwest in the Fall workshops

Don Mammoser and I have a pair of autumn workshops in the southwest this coming year. In late September we've got the Slot Canyons and Monument Valley workshop and at the end of October we're going to Zion National Park. Don't worry, we've planned this workshop so you'll have plenty of time to get home before the election.
Enjoy the holidays

Have a great holiday season. Hope you have plenty of time off and that you buy yourself something fun. Maybe my book???
Me, I'm still thinking of that Nikon D300......
