Greetings
The last month has been busy for me. Three workshops in four weeks, but I got to see a lot of nice images and also see some neat things (like sunrise from Steptoe Butte and a Lynx kitten being really, really cute)
Workshop updates

On the workshop front, there are only two spaces left in our Canadian Rockies workshop this September. And there is only one space left in the Yosemite workshop next April.
The Triple "D" Mariposa wildlife/Day at the Ranch shoot in April is full pending the receipt of some deposits. We have started a waiting list for this workshop. If you'd like to be on the waiting list, email me.

As far as other workshop in 2008, both Don Mammoser and I have been pretty busy but we'll get out details for the Colorado Wildflowers, Slots and Monument Valley, and the Zion workshops as soon as we can.

Upcoming Book Signing

My new book, The Photographer's Guide to Puget Sound and Northwest Washington is now available. You can get your autographed copy by order ing from my website. For those of you in the Puget Sound area, I'll be signing books at Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo on Friday August 3rd from 6:30 to about 8:00 pm.

And don't forget about The Photographer's Guide to the Oregon Coast that I co-authored with David Middleton. That's still available and can also be ordered from my website.

Equipment updates

Like any other photography, I like gear, gadgets, and other goodies. I love being able to use the latest equipment from my D200 to the Singh-Ray vari-ND filter I have.
But one piece of gear I hadn't updated in a long time is my tripod. My trusty (and heavy) Gitzo 320 had been with me for over 13 years and it's always been reliable.
I've been contemplating the switch to one of the new and lighter carbon fiber tripods but I figured that the cost always outweighed, so to speak, the gain I'd see in having a lighter tripod. I just figured that at about $650 I'd just rather carry around the extra 3 1/2 pounds or so of my Gitzo 320.

Well, with my upcoming trip to Patagonia, I wanted to shave as much weight at possible from my gear and so I took the plunge and bought the Gitzo GT3530LSV carbon fiber tripod. It's the same height as my 320 but it's about 3.5 lbs. lighter.
I knew I'd like the lighter weight. What I didn't realize was just how much quicker this tripod is to use than my older one. I can now set up and take down in a fraction of the time I could with my old tripod. A nice added bonus. Now I'm kicking myself in the butt for not having upgraded earlier.

In Closing

I guess that's all I have for now. Hope your summer is going well, had an enjoyable 4th of July, and that you're not in the grip of the heat that some of the country is finding itself in. If you are, head for an air conditioned theater or something.
